Now that’s a YA fantasy book I really enjoyed! No, I loved it! At about 60% in the book I couldn’t catch my breath from all the things that happened in the past – and were still happening – to Cassel. It was fast-paced with great, believable dialogue, while the first person POV really made me invested in the protagonist’s life.
I am in awe of the opening paragraphs when you have no idea what’s going on and you stumble, right along Cassel, to get a grasp on the situation. It reminded me of the beginning in the excellent Fledgling by Octavia Butler. Holly Black made me want to jump right back in to the next book in the series – Red Glove – and never stop reading. Absolutely brilliant.
I don’t want to say anything more in case of spoilers, since this book is leaning heavily on the surprise factor. Even though you can kind of see where all is headed there are still things you can’t possibly expect. Excellent!
