I can’t believe it’s finished. I saw that there is a fourth book scheduled and, though I’m concerned it won’t be as good, I’m really looking forward in reading it. I just love Cassel, he’s an amazingly interesting character and I can’t get enough of him trying to squirm out of harm’s way. He’s getting into trouble all the time; half the time he doesn’t even know which side he’s on (not even his own).
Now, about the romantic aspect… well, what can I say? I really don’t care about his love life. I understand that there has to be something of a motive for most of his actions, but I would be content with his motive for doing “good” (kind of good), and helping out his family and friends. I guess he should have a love interest, but being head over heals for a girl as ruthless as Lila is – who, by the way, doesn’t seem all that ruthless; it’s usually other people saying that and it’s not completely apparent by her actions – makes no sense to me. You could say that love, usually, doesn’t make sense but I really don’t buy it.
The federal agents I liked. I enjoyed Yulikova playing Cassel’s feelings and Agent Jone’s unrelenting hatred of our poor protagonist. Love to hate that guy. Governor Patton proved an, all too easy, mark; naturally I’m disappointed but, seriously, who cares about that asshole?
And… I know what the writer is trying to do with Barron but I’ll let it slide because I honestly like this character.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was a nice closing to a trilogy – but, since there is at least one more book in the series, it leaves you with no cliffhanger and a satisfying sense that nothing is too bleak.
Thumbs up!
