This book is so awful I can’t even begin to describe what’s wrong with it. Let me start by saying that the writing isn't bad – it’s actually along the same lines as most YA books. The characters! Oh how I loathe them. From the teenage boy – who really doesn't sound like a teenage boy – to the powerful “witch”-type girl he fell in love with, the characters are unconvincing, unsympathetic and, generally, quite obnoxious (when they leave an impression to you that is).
The plot is quite naive and “see-through”, almost childish and not in a good way. I read children’s books (middle-class) that are better than this. I mean I'm not really that difficult to please when it comes to YA stories: I like the school dramas, I enjoy the magical and supernatural elements of fantasy, and I tend to keep judgement to the minimum until I really can’t stand anything more. I have to confess that I didn't even finish the book, I stopped at the 57% of the eBook edition. I’ll watch the movie instead – maybe it translates better in that medium.*
That being said, I don’t want to offend anyone that enjoyed the book, and the series; this is just my honest and personal opinion. Thank you for not yelling at me!
*I watched the movie. I have nothing good to say but that I managed to watch it through the end.
